Stepford Knives – “Blue in the Face” / “I Don’t Want Her”Review by Richard Rossi

Stepford Knives are Jamie Hooverand Otis Hughes. Their new single is a winner in more ways than one. This is pop music at it’s best and most effective – appropriately delivered on blue vinyl. Even the cover artwork is colorful and expressive.

“Blue in the Face” is the “A” side, hence the blue vinyl. For those who like their pop on the cerebral side, this is the track for you. The disjointed nature of the composition can make you squirm a bit, making it perfect for a theme that’s uncomfortable. Not unlike those Partridge/Moulding compositions of yesteryear, Hughes and Hoover aren’t afraid to shake things up a bit – or take the pop formula and turn it on it’s head.

By contrast, the “B” side is pure radio friendly power pop. Sponetones fans will absolutely dig “I Don’t Want Her (Anymore)” with it’s bounce, guitar jangle and catchy chorus. Roll the car window down and turn it up.

Steve Stoeckel plays ukulele on the “A” side, which is pretty cool. And the cover artwork by Issa Ibraham expresses an angst that’s befitting of the “A” side.

1/20/20-Stepford Knives-a blue vinyl 45 release!!

Stepford Knives 45’s! A brand new release from me and my bud Otis Hughes on BLUE vinyl with an artwork sleeve by Issa Ibrahim, designed by Michael Slawter. Mastered for vinyl by Dan Millace! VINYL IS FINAL! Where to buy? From me! The easiest way is to use Paypal and my email-jamie@jamiehoover.net. $10 plus shipping, which is the US should be covered by $5. In other words…$15. If you want me to sign it myself I’ll be happy to-but I’ll have to remove the shrink wrap. I’ll be sending it personally…..(ah, the glamor of the music industry)

The A side “Blue In The Face” is written and sung by Otis. I can’t tell you how much talent this guy has-and I’m so glad we did this! Very alternative….dark, and cool. The B side, “I Don’t Want Her (Anymore)” was written by the late-great David Enloe-and Otis and I sing it as a duet. In a perfect world…this is a hit, in my opinion.

So I’ve thought about this a lot. In my career selling records is difficult and expensive to do, at best. I also don’t burn down the world with sales….so my pressings are limited to usually 300 units. The thing is-I’d rather release something of value packaging-wise, not to mention that vinyl SOUNDS better. You have to be involved to play vinyl….it’s more fun to handle. The difference in getting a download-card and getting a record on colored vinyl…is like comparing a “gift card” to a wrapped Holiday present! Much more fun….

1/15/20-“For The Record: A Tribute To John Wicks”!!!!

So Richard Rossi and I have been working on this project together for the better part of last year-and it’s finally released! “For The Recored: A Tribute To John Wicks”, a compilation cd of 12 unreleased tracks by the late-great John Wicks of The Records fame. When we started John was still alive. He got to hear one track but only just before he passed and was unable to sing on it. So sad, but we decided to carry on with the project, asking friend-of-John/guest singers to complete the recordings. We were able to amass an impressive lineup…Ray Paul, Peter Case, Al Stewart, Chris Thompson, Paul Collins, Don Dixon, Carla Olson, Bill Berry, Kyle Frost, Nick Guzman (with Elliot Easton), I sang a track, and John’s voice on one we found. Also many other cool side players. Most of the music, I did myself. Richard co-wrote the lion’s share of these tunes with John.

This is a project that comes around once in a lifetime, so needless to say-I am HONORED to have been involved in this! Thanks to everyone involved and especially to Richard Rossi, to whom this would have never happened without his love, time, money, and devotion!

Go ye forth and BUY-right now!!!!! These songs are fabulous! Please feel free to share this!! PROCEEDS FROM SALES WILL GO TO JOHN’S SON PERRY, AND TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.
