I just did my second Workshop on, you guessed it: Songwriting. It is my mission now in life to make sure there are no unnecessary barriers to getting songs out of your head and into some sort of music box. With that box-comes other boxes.

These boxes are your equipment that you use to reproduce your thoughts and ideas, to appreciate later. Those can be any number of types of boxes: an acoustic guitar, a piano, a voice? Those are the basics. With any of them you can write songs. The problem is; without other “boxes”-the only one that will possibly hear and appreciate what you’ve created might just be yourself. How is your memory lately? Mine…not so good sometimes. Now what was it I sang? Chords?

So we buy equipment for this: a computer, software, speakers/headphones, microphones, an interface (to get your sounds inside the computer,) and possibly a few other things needed. Sounds like a lot? Not really. I can fit a great recording rig on a 3X5 table, and it could go in a corner of any small apartment. It doesn’t have to be a lot of stuff, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

What it DOES need…is to be set up, checked out, wired up, semi-understood, and READY TO GO! Then, nothing but yourself that stands in your way of creating. You’d be surprised what you could get done in an hour and a half at the end of a long day, but if, and only if—you leave it set up and ready to rock with-at the drop-of-a-hat.

My point here: If your box..is boxed…you are trapped yourself (wait for it)….…in a box.

Cheers!
